The Evolution of Information Retrieval

Abstract

The first 50 years of electronic information retrieval has
been an exciting ride:

-- from feeble computers and tiny storage to today's machines and beyond
-- massive growth in problem sizes and text collections
-- where have we succeeded?
-- where have we not yet succeeded? Why not?
-- why is evaluation still a hot topic after nearly 50 years?
-- where are the opportunities for future breakthroughs?
-- what's exciting about the IRF?

The talk will take a practical and commercial perspective on a half century
of research and is planned to include a live demonstration and, subject to
technological limits, some crystal ball gazing.
